Consumer Spec - Pre Market Wrap
MS Sees Broadening into Consumer Discretionary | BTIG Tech Vulnerable, Goldman HF Flows, MGM Cut on People Inc. Bid, CAKE Cut Valuation, CROX/HOG/LEVI/HAS Bull Reiterations, GS Eyewear Read
Macro is positive for consumer to start as oil hits lowest levels since early March and rates rally alongside. Morgan Stanley flagging a broadening trade into Consumer Discretionary with goods pricing finally outpacing services at 4.5%, earnings revisions breadth flipping to +12% from -9%, and HFs net buying US equities for a third straight week. Single-name flow mixed: Stifel cuts MGM to Hold at $49 after People Inc.'s $48.30 take-private bid (feels stingy), Northcoast trims CAKE to Neutral purely on valuation, while Stifel lifts CROX PT to $125. Bulls pushing HAS as Jefferies' Nantucket top pick on the WotC re-rate, LEVI at $27, HOG at $30 from Wolfe.
Watch for rotation today into financials, consumer, industrials and high yield credit (HYG/SHYG).
MACRO & MARKETS
MARKET: MORGAN STANLEY SEES MARKET BROADENING INTO CONSUMER DISCRETIONARY, TRANSPORTS, REGIONAL BANKS
Morgan Stanley sees the recent equity market correction as digestion of peak rates of change in earnings revisions breadth and liquidity, with strategist Michael Wilson arguing the pullback supports a broadening of market leadership toward under-owned cyclical sectors including Consumer Discretionary Goods, Transports, and Regional Banks. The firm characterizes such transitions as normal during earnings bull markets, particularly explosive ones, adding NTM EPS estimates should keep rising through year-end.
For Consumer Discretionary Goods specifically, Morgan Stanley points to a wallet-share shift from services to goods, with goods pricing at 4.5% outpacing services pricing for the first time since 2022, while earnings revisions breadth has risen to +12% from -9% two months ago. The preferred subgroup is already up 9% over the past month versus a 1% S&P decline, yet sentiment and positioning remain “bearish and muted.”
US MACRO (BTIG): BROADENING IS BACK, TECH STILL VULNERABLE
BTIG flags market leadership broadening again as equal-weight S&P 500 reclaims outperformance vs. the cap-weighted index with Middle East headwinds fading, though the firm thinks Tech has another leg lower toward its 50 DMA after sliding ~8% from the June 2 peak. Mag7 is holding its 200 DMA in absolute terms with scope for a near-term bounce, but the relative breakdown vs. the Nasdaq nearing multi-year lows argues for caution; semis remain resilient but momentum is fading.
The analyst is constructive on Financials (BKX at fresh highs after consolidating most of 2026, capital markets coiled near highs via KCE with BGC, BEN, EVR, MC flagged), REITs (VNQ above $100 implies ~$117), LatAm (ILF timely after pulling back to its rising 200 DMA, EWZ reclaiming its 200 DMA), and copper (HG1 consolidating since the early-May base breakout, FCX poised for a breakout), while Discretionary (XRT) and Staples (XLP) consolidate but look positioned for upside with KHC and TGT named. BTIG adds that positioning has not fully unwound, so breadth can keep improving even as the tech/AI trade pulls back further.
Goldman Prime Monitor: HFs net bought US equities for a third straight week and at the fastest pace in over 6 months
Flows driven by long buys outpacing short sales across both Single Stocks and Macro Products. 8/11 sectors were net bought, led by Industrials, which saw the largest net buying in nearly 5 months, and Info Tech, which has now seen de-grossing activity in 5 of the last 7 weeks

MGM: STIFEL DOWNGRADES TO HOLD ON PEOPLE INC. TAKE-PRIVATE OFFER AT $48.30; PT $49
Stifel downgraded MGM Resorts from Buy to Hold with a $49 PT (from $48) following People Inc.’s (formerly IAC) announcement of a take-private offer at $48.30/share, valuing the company at roughly 7.7x the firm’s 2027E EBITDAR. The analyst says there appears to be less internal support for this transaction than for the recently announced CZR deal, and investors clearly believe the initial bid undervalues the company given shares now trade above the offer price. The firm adds it sees meaningful risk that the current offer is terminated and shares re-rate lower, prompting the move to the sidelines while questions remain over whether the MGM Board would accept higher competing bids.
CAKE: NORTHCOAST DOWNGRADES TO NEUTRAL STRICTLY ON VALUATION DESPITE TRAFFIC MOMENTUM
Northcoast downgraded Cheesecake Factory from Buy to Neutral strictly on valuation. The analyst notes traffic momentum should drive SSS above the 1-2% management expects, with strong sales unlocking flow-through profits and stronger sequential consolidated store margins despite food and labor inflation risk. The firm says modest menu price increases could limit store margin expansion through next year, and high single-digit unit growth, while compelling and sustainable, is unlikely to meaningfully accelerate as emerging brands mature. Northcoast remains bullish on North Italia and Flower Child as future billion-dollar brands but believes share price has caught up to the bullish thesis of industry-leading unit growth and stable organic sales driving double-digit EPS growth.
HOG: WOLFE RESEARCH REITERATES OUTPERFORM AT $30 PT; RETAIL MOMENTUM AND DEALER SENTIMENT IMPROVING
Wolfe Research reiterated an Outperform rating and $30 PT on Harley-Davidson. The analyst says retail momentum has improved and dealer sentiment is ticking up, with the new CEO bringing a fresh perspective on inventory and prioritizing de-stocking excess units, resulting in a more efficient go-to-market approach. The firm adds the Harley-dealer relationship has improved over the past 6+ months, though management cautions 1Q was not a sign of a full turnaround but part of a multi-year initiative slate. A key focus is re-entering the entry-level $10-15k segment where Harley ceded ground, with new Sprint and Sportster models expected to drive interest. Inventories are described as generally healthy worldwide, with North America close to ideal balance.
CROX: STIFEL RAISES PT TO $125 FROM $105; MAINTAINS HOLD ON REVENUE DURABILITY
Stifel raised the PT on Crocs to $125 from $105 while maintaining a Hold rating. The analyst notes management meetings reinforced building blocks of the value thesis, adding confidence in revenue durability across long-term brand potential, revenue diversification, cash flow generation, and capital allocation. The firm says Crocs brand expansion beyond the mature U.S. Classic Clog into sandals, lifestyle, accessories, and international shows promise, while HEYDUDE’s refocus on the core male consumer adds portfolio balance with brand challenges largely in the rear-view mirror. With the 2025 North America promotional reset beginning to anniversary, channel inventories are reportedly much healthier, and buyback capacity supports $14+ EPS in 2026 at 1.0x net leverage. The new PT reflects 7.3x EV/EBITDA on 2026E.
LEVI: BOFA REITERATES BUY AT $27 PT, FLAGS VALUATION UPSIDE AND DURABLE MSD GROWTH
BofA highlighted Levi Strauss as a denim stock with valuation upside and durable MSD% sales growth potential, rated Buy at a $27 PT. The analyst notes core denim bottoms represent 64% of sales, but growth in underpenetrated categories like tops and women’s is outpacing total company sales, with the head-to-toe lifestyle expansion still early and representing a 15x TAM. The firm says consistent sales growth reflects years of DTC, store, and international investment, and now expects management to harvest those gains via tighter expense control, limited headcount growth, and global talent hubs to unlock stronger flow-through. Distribution at 7% of sales has a clear path to 6%, supported by the ongoing US DC transition driving cost savings in 2H26.
HAS: JEFFERIES REITERATES BUY AS TOP TOY PICK INTO NANTUCKET
Jefferies reiterates HAS as its top toy pick heading into the Nantucket conference, with the firm arguing the structural shift toward an IP-driven gaming platform remains underappreciated, anchored by Wizards of the Coast contributing >85% of EBIT and durable Magic: The Gathering demand the analyst likens to a premium hobby ecosystem rather than traditional toys. WotC continues to deliver high-30s% to low-40s% margins on strong tabletop demand and expanding digital monetization, while management’s track record of conservatively setting guidance and raising through the year remains a source of upside. Shares trade at ~9.3x FY2 EV/EBITDA vs. Games Workshop ~20.1x and Take-Two ~17.2x, with the firm’s SOTP framework valuing WotC at a mid- to high-teens multiple and Consumer Products at ~7-9x; estimates sit at 5.89/6.35 EPS for ‘26E/’27E on $4.98B/$5.22B revenue. The analyst sees a clear path to re-rating as mix continues to shift and investors recognize HAS as a gaming/IP platform rather than a legacy toy company.
EYEWEAR: GOLDMAN VIEWS BEST BUY/META PARTNERSHIP A POSITIVE FOR SMART GLASSES ADOPTION, NOT A RISK TO EYE/WRBY/ESLX
Goldman views Best Buy’s June 8 partnership with Meta to open Meta Labs across 50+ store locations as a net positive for industry-wide AI smart glasses adoption rather than a competitive threat to specialty eyewear names. For EYE, the firm sees no meaningful risk given National Vision’s differentiation through an integrated eye exam, prescription, lens, and frames offering for the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. For WRBY, the analyst expects increased focus on the company’s ability to capture traffic ahead of its AI glasses launch this fall, but does not view the partnership as a risk given integrated prescription/lens capabilities and ~337 owned stores plus digital channels. For ESLX, the firm reads the announcement favorably, with broader distribution and added consumer education resources supporting smart glasses adoption.
WMT: Chinese regulators summoned executives from Walmart's China unit over food-safety issues at Sam's Club stores and online platforms. The State Administration for Market Regulation said Monday that it had met with the management team of Walmart's Sam's Club unit after identifying multiple food-safety incidents involving the retailer's stores and online platforms. Regulators urged the company to strengthen food-safety controls, comply with relevant laws and regulations, and address risks across its supply chain, according to the statement (Bloomberg).
